45% of health & fitness apps track you across other apps and websites

86 of the 191 Health & Fitness apps we analyzed declare cross-app tracking in their App Store privacy label. According to Apple, "tracking" means the app links your data, such as your device ID, email, or advertising identifier, with data collected by other companies' apps, websites, or offline properties, for targeted advertising or advertising measurement purposes. This also includes sharing your data with data brokers.

45% of these apps request Apple's App Tracking Transparency (ATT) permission, which triggers the system prompt: "Allow [App] to track your activity across other companies' apps and websites." Users who select "Ask App Not to Track" deny the app access to Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA).

69% of health & fitness apps collect identifiers linked to your identity

Separately from cross-app tracking, apps collect data and link it to your identity. Apple defines "Data Linked to You" as data connected to your identity, such as your account, device, or profile, by the developer or their third-party partners. Unlike tracking data, this data isn't necessarily shared with advertisers, but the developer or their partners know it belongs to you.

Advertising and analytics SDKs from companies like Meta and Google enable cross-app tracking, targeted ads, and behavioral analytics.

Methodology

This report covers 191 Health & Fitness apps from the Apple App Store. Each app was downloaded and its compiled binary scanned for embedded SDKs, iOS permissions, and entitlements using static analysis. No code was decompiled or reverse-engineered.

Privacy label data, including tracking declarations and data linked to identity, comes directly from Apple's App Store and is self-reported by developers. Apple requires developers to keep privacy labels accurate and may request evidence, but does not systematically verify every disclosure against actual app behavior. SDK data in this report is independently verified through binary analysis.

This research is produced by Counterspy, our independent app privacy analysis project.

If 45% of the apps you use every day are tracking you, what can you do about it?
